Words cannot describe the sadness at hearing of Mary-Lou’s passing…not sadness for her, but for those of us left behind. She was a tireless advocate for Christian education and fiercely stood for truth in the face of adversity. As a staff we saw glimpses of that as she would sometimes share about meetings she had with government or that she was waiting “patiently” for an answer from the education department to one of her questions. I look forward to sharing “Mary-Lou-isms” with other staff members such as “There is no emergency in home education”, a reminder that there is time to think things through and chose a best course of action rather than reacting to a perceived sense of urgency in the moment. She always took time to talk and be present with the people she was with and never acted hurried even though I knew she had about a thousand other things to do, and she always closed our conversations with “Thank you, my friend.” I will forever appreciate the day of my first field trip in the Lethbridge area when she and Kristin drove down to be present and give me support. After all the families had left, even though she had a long drive home she took time to talk with me…I don’t remember what about, but it was doubtlessly about Christ, education, or more likely, both! (And thank you, Kristin, for patiently spending time with my young son…your ease at doing so showed that it was something you were used to doing!) I was blessed to call Mary-Lou my principal and my friend. She will be forever missed but never forgotten.

I enjoyed knowing Mary-Lou as a friend, parent of my student and my school administrator. I appreciated how she supported and was a strong advocate of the school music program and supported my ideas for events and activities. She entrusted me with her daughter Kristin’s piano instruction for many years and was friendly with an infectious laugh. I appreciated when she called on the phone or texted by asking “Is now is a good time?” as she was considerate of my involvement in various commitments. Don and Mary-Lou raised four wonderful children of who, at least she witnessed them all growing up. She will be missed so much!

She was one of my first mentors when I entered the field of education.
She and Monika were instrumental in getting the Paving Health Pathways curriculum off the ground in Alberta.
Rest In Peace, my friend. The world is definitely a better place because of you.

There’s so much I want to say about Mary-Lou, I’d be here for a long time if I could write about everything this wonderful woman meant to me.
We began to work together during a difficult time. We went through the fire.
One thing I quickly learned about Mary-Lou, not only was she a wonderful woman of God, she stood for truth.
In times we can get too busy with our lives that we can forget things, even as Pastors (we do forget things from time to time). During our difficult year we faced together, Any normal person would have quit…But during the hardship, she constantly made me think of 2 things,
- Be Right with God
- THE RESPONSIBILITY WE HAVE to pursue to have a RIGHT SPIRIT before God
It didn’t matter what giant we faced. God is bigger. It didn’t matter what lie we faced, Truth is real
To see her face head on - not wavering or fearing what others may say, was such an honour. A modern day lady Elijah. Such a humble woman but also willing to stand against false prophets.
An honour to see her not just speak about Jesus ….but we who had the privilege of knowing Mary-Lou, have been blessed by her life, for we all saw a glimpse of our Lord Jesus Christ living in her.
She was a true gift from God
My prayer for the Stacey family is to have a bit of heaven everyday.
That they may feel the comfort of our Lord, and feel the Lord helping and guiding them all in their lives as they walk on uncharted waters as a family.
Something we should all have hope for….. scripture says:
“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.”
Revelation 21:1
Sea represents separation, one day there will be no more separation.
I have to/ I must be a better Christian, so I can be separated no more from a friend. From the bottom of my heart, Mary-Lou Stacey, I do not say GOODBYE - I say: I’ll see you later

Mary-Lou, I will always look back on our long phone conversations with gratitude, especially one in particular, when you accompanied me for almost the whole drive home to Calgary, following another of many exhausting days, dedicated to fighting for education choice in Alberta.
Your energy was infectious and seemingly endless, your kindness and compassion deep, your natural joy, radiant smile, and spirit, expansive, and your commitment to students and their families unwavering.
You will be greatly missed, and impossible to ever replace, but you left a legacy that will lead the way for those that follow you!
We know we are not alone, as you accompany us with prayers from heaven, like you accompanied me on that long drive home to Calgary, and with you always at our sides in spirit, we are sustained. I thank God for sharing you with the world, Mary-Lou!

My heart is broken with such a deep sense of loss. You will be so greatly missed this side of heaven, but I look forward with hope to when we will meet once again.

Mary-Lou was a friend, colleague, confidant, mentor and Steeler adversary.
When Mary-Lou hired me three years ago, she told me how it came to fruition with a friend of hers, Mrs. Jennifer Johnson. She called Jen (hadn't talked in about a year) and said to her, "Jen you know someone who can fill my vacancy for a VP". Jen said she didn't but Mary-Lou insisted she did. If I remember correctly, Jen called Mary-Lou the next morning with a name (mine) and Jen called me to tell me to call Mary-Lou if I wanted to hear about the job. The rest, as they say, is history.
Mary-Lou was a strong woman of faith, evident in her following the Spirit's prompting to contact Jen.
Her lone weakness was mistakenly calling "soccer", "football". Something I would show no sway when speaking to her about the subject.
I will miss her deeply, from her mentorship, to her friendship and the banter we shared most joyously!

I well remember my first of many meetings with Mary-Lou…we lingered long over coffee in Don’s presence. We shared common concerns for the education of precious students in Alberta. We discussed strategies, procedures and a desire to encourage teachers to fully integrate biblical principles within instruction. Her cordiality at Koinonia Christian School in Red Deer was notable.
I am deeply impacted by your shock and sorrow; Psalm 56 tells us God keeps a record of all our tears.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Miller

The last time I met with Mary-Lou I was seeking understanding and counsel. As always she had a lot on her plate and was very busy. After we closed down the little coffee shop, as we did every time we met, I thanked her for meeting with me and expressed that I felt like I was wasting her time with my trivial issues when she had so much to do. She responded with “you are never a waste of my time.”
Her intelligence and business never outweighed her compassion for people. That is such a testament to her relationship with and her example of Christ.
I, as so many others, will miss her greatly!
Don, Michael, Matthew, Kate and Kristin, you and your families will be in my prayers in the days to come. I can’t imagine the difficulty of this loss.
In Him

I had the honour of working with Mary-Louise In Christian Education. She was always encouraging direct and a passionate advocate for Biblical fidelity in Christian education. Though our professional relationship ended, we continued to share ideas about great Christian Schools, while she was working on her Masters.
I look forward to picking up the threads of that conversation one day when we meet again. We both knew that in the New Jerusalem there will be a lot of current professions that won't be needed anyone, but the one that will last forever is learning new and wonderful things about Jesus. I look forward to working with her again in this joy increasing reality.

My sincere condolences to the Stacey family, the Koinonia Red Deer family, and the many friends and colleagues who are grieving. I only came to know Mary-Lou in the autumn of 2024 when I became the Alberta Education liason for Koinonia. In that short time I had the opportunity to have many conversations with her. She was thoughtful, curious, questioning, and always looking for ways to do better by her students, their families, and the whole school community. In the course of our conversations she spoke fondly of her family, she was always cheery and optimistic, always rooted in her faith. The education community will miss her, and I will miss our conversations. Rest in Paradise! Memory eternal!

To the Stacey Family,
It is with deep sadness and shock that I grieve the loss of one of the best friends you can find in a lifetime. Mary-Lou was one of the most inspiring people you could ever meet and work alongside with. I always admired her for her depth of knowledge, strength and dedication to teaching with love. She touched the hearts of so many, more specifically mine, my husband, David, and two children, Amber and Matthew. We are all saddened by this news and want you to know that we care about those she is leaving behind to carry out her legacy of love and I know that her love will continue to live through you all. We send our love and prayers in this time of great loss.
Love,
Selena & family

I met Mary-Lou at a 4-H Club Week program where she worked as our First Aider. I was impressed by her warm and caring personality, her professionalism and her sense of humour. I think Mary-Lou and Don met at this program. I had known Don for a few years through 4-H. I was so saddened to learn of her sudden passing. Such a loss to the family and the world at large. I send my love and condolences to Don and family and friends. May her memory be a blessing to all of you. Liz Webster Goddard
