Alex was a long time friend of my Dad. Because of this, I knew Alex for as long as I can remember. He had an incredible memory, and even though he had not seen me for years, he still knew who I was when I went to one of his art shows. I was honored and privileged when he invited me to the ceremony after he received the Royal Order of Canada.
He was a brilliant artist and once told me "If only I could paint what I see in my mind". I cannot image what beauty he saw behind his eyelids.
The world is a better place because he was part of it.
He is sadly missed.

Q: What will you never forget about Alexan?
A: In July 2018 a friend and I traveled to Calgary for the first time for Stampede. During our visit, we stopped by Glenblow gallery that had an Alex Janvier exhibit. I had never experienced such amazing, colorful and captivating artwork. I was immediately transformed. Though I never had the honor of meeting Alex, I thank him for creating such beautiful and inspiring work.
Thank you and may you continue to paint rainbows in the snow.

Back in 1985, for a University of Alberta Arts Management Class, we were given an assignment to interview an artist. Our Family were friends with Alex and the Javier's, and my Dad who played hockey with Alex, arranged an interview with Alex in his studio.
I remember walking in and seeing all the beautiful art everywhere in the beautiful log studio! Alex was gracious during the interview, but made me work for my info. He gave lots of one word answers, and had a mischievous smile, as he was giving them.
I will never forget that day, and the unique and interesting visit with Alex, who exemplified artistic greatness, while remaining humble and having a great sense of humor.
Alex, you will be missed by Canada's Arts Community and your Friends and Family who were all inspired by your talent, generosity and presence. God Bless!

I met you and an other elder for the first time at an U of A Art Gala in 2018. I wasn’t sure where to sit. You included me in the laughter and conversation. You were a very humble man. As one of the Seven Woodland artists I greatly admired your individuality. You will be held in the hearts and minds of many Indigenous artists. You will be remembered and missed.

I met Alex Janvier at an art exhibit at Grand Centre High School. When I mentioned a famous family artist, Maxine Noel, he said he knew her, and we became friends. Throughout the years, Alex was always joking and teasing. My husband Rod and Alex played old timers' hockey and whenever he saw Rod he would mention that Rod was married to that "Sioux woman." He was always teasing and smiling with that twinkle in his eyes.
Whenever I went to the Lakeland Inn for lunch I would occasionally see Alex there. He would ask me to join him, and I would. My lunch would be soup and sandwich. I noticed that Alex always had Rainbow trout. He said he didn't care if it was fresh or frozen, he loved his Rainbow trout.
One time at his art gallery, Alex explained one particular painting that expressed his experience at the Indian Residential School. I felt the fear and terror of my time at an Indian Residential School. Jackie made some tea and we sat and talked for a while, until I felt better. Alex and Jackie were so kind, considerate, and understanding.
For eternity Alex Janvier, you will be remembered through your art works, truth, and courage that you have shown us all.
Peace, Joy and Love from that "Sioux Woman."

When a great artist passes away, it leaves a big hole in the art world and their own community. There is great power in art, and Alex aptly filled that role in so many wonderful ways.
Being an artist is a difficult life. But Alex knew what he was doing. And he never gave up.
Alex was always an inspiration to me as young emerging artist.
While exhibiting my own work in Winnipeg with one of my first large big- city painting exhibitions, I was also touring galleries in that city. If my memory of the name is correct, it was very exciting to see some of Alex's early works at the Grand Western Canadian Screen Shop in that city.
I recall thinking " If he can do it, so can I", and I was no longer afraid to market my own paintings in the big commercial galleries of western Canada.
Later, Alex and I had lunch one day at Clark's Eatery in Cold Lake. I told him about how encouraged I was when I had seen his work in Winnipeg, and that I felt less afraid that I would fail.
Alex laughed and said "You wont fail. Keep painting."
We also talked about travelling in the North, as he knew I had spent a lot of my life in the North. Alex had travelled to Yellowknife for either a show or was completing a commision. The year was 2008 I think.
Such an inspiration and a wonderful legacy for the Dene suline people of our area and other artists in our region.
A man ahead of his time.
My thoughts and prayers are with Alex's long time wife Jacqueline and their family.
Having lost a beloved father years ago- I remember well the wise words of a close family friend who said " Remember. He lives on in you."
God bless all of you.

We met Alex and Jacqueline when Alex and Myles were both represented by the same gallery, FrameCraft, in Edmonton. The first painting we bought for our collection was one by Alex.
We had many wonderful visits with the Janviers and the three children, Dean, Tricia, and Duane, when we lived in Edmonton. There were also great dinner parties with friends and fellow artists. When the family moved to Cold Lake, Myles spent time there, painting a work for them based on their landscape. We had moved to Spruce Home and Alex would pop in for a quick visit on his way to Carrot River to see Jacqueline's family.
Not only was Alex a truly great artist, he was also a kind, gentle, thoughtful family man and friend. We will miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you and with Alex. Go in peace, Alex, and may all of you be filled with peace soon, and take joy in having know this lovely man.

Please accept my deepest condolences to the Janvier family. I became aware of the incredible art and life of Alex Janvier back in 1991. He was a generous, creative and inspiring individual who I appreciated very much and looked up to over the years. In visiting the Janvier Gallery when it was still in the town of Cold Lake, my entire family was in awe of the paintings displayed there and they had the chance to visit with Alex. In going to the newer gallery over the past several years, one can only stand in even deeper appreciation of the talent, dedication and love of his craft that Alex and his family had on display. He was truly a remarkable person who will be missed by all.

Q: What 3 words best describe Alexan and why?
A: Courageous, gifted and beautiful. I loved him so very deeply. He was my dad for forever., and now we move on without him. He was so courageous to go out in the world and forge a path for us all to see. Being indigenous in his time was not an easy road. But he didn’t flinch that life was hard for him. He held himself well. He is also just was so beautiful. Like the way he saw the world made seeing a fly, or virtually anything amazing. I learned to see from him, and to breathe more deeply in those moments. His gifts are so very evident as he was of Canada and the worlds best. He put our Nation on the map and we now have a gallery people seek to travel to. I am still in awe of the many things he was in our family. You truly are “the one who leads”. Masi chok setaze.❤️

Several years ago I met Alex at a healing circle near St. Paul, Alberta. I was attempting to paint a picture of some sort and after several minutes of trying to create something nice and pleasant I got frustrated. I wildly splashed green and red paint onto my canvas and grabbed a handful of grass to create a pattern. I noticed someone watching me. A woman came up to me and said "do you know who that is who is watching you paint?" I said, "No, who?" She told me but I had no clue who Alex was. Alex came up to me and said, "Blood and Guts", "You have blood and guts. I wish more people did." He then proceeded to tell me what he saw in my freestyle painting and encouraged me to keep painting. That started a friendship which lasted for the short time I worked in St. Paul. I still have that painting and when it is on my walls people always ask who created it. Alex was an incredible soul. A gentle spirit with an eye for eternity. I thank the Creator for the honour Alex gave to me in seeking me out and our spiritual conversations we had. I never did buy one of Alex's paintings (not yet) but will remember his legacy whenever I hold a paintbrush or pen in hand. My deepest condolences to his lovely family in saying goodbye to an elder whose life was a mosaic that experienced the darkest night of the soul to lighting that darkness with the shining embers of faith, hope and peace. Sincerely, Rev. Adelina Pecchia ,formerly of St. Paul, Alberta

In 1974 as a recently married young couple we purchased our first home and were keen on buying our first original piece of art. We were frequent visitors to all our local galleries and one day viewed a showing by Alex at the Frame Craft Gallery in Edmonton. From our first introduction we knew this man and his art were very special and we had to have one - our very first piece of original art. It took us forever to decide on which piece that we could afford to buy. When we finally picked “our Janvier” we had our picture taken with Alex and our new art, boy did we all look so young! Over the years we became collectors and lovers of many Canadian artists, but our Janvier continues to be absolutely special to us and brings a smile every time we see it. We now have two of Alex’s works and both are so very special to us. Not too many years ago we met again at Canada House Gallery in Banff and told Alex about our 1974 meeting him and our important early purchase of his painting, as well as our ongoing love of his art. A picture of the three of us was taken and Alex kindly signing a very personal note in a book of his work that warmed our hearts then, as it does now.
As we reflect on our very personal encounters with Alex, we wanted you to know the impact your husband, father and grandfather has had on us over the years. We are deeply sorry for your loss. We share in your sadness and we hope that you find a sense of comfort in your fondest memories of this beautiful man whose impact has shaped the art world in Canada.
With deepest condolences, Donna and Jim McPherson
