As I listened to the funeral service for Uncle Dave my heart warmed as I smiled and shed tears through the memories. He taught me to fish both trolling and ice fishing. He pulled us with his fishing boat so Natasha and I could learn how to water ski. Uncle Dave was one of my biggest hockey fans and as everyone knows that deep voice was great for cheering. A great story I like to tell about uncle Dave was when I went to Crane Lake to help him landscape the yard. He had a couple dump truck loads of top soil dropped in the drive way and we had 2 shovels and a wheel barrel. I ask if we had a packer for the soil before we sodded and he handed me a two by four. We had a great time moving that dirt and jumping on that two by four to pack the soil. He was all about hard work and having fun. As in the movie Happy Gilmore when they say go to your happy place, my mind always go back to those days at Crane Lake and having fun with Uncle Dave and family.

When I think about Uncle Dave and the many memories I have about him it takes me back to my childhood when my three uncles, Dave, Cornel and Peter, would visit my family in Ardmore. They loved to go fishing at a nearby lake, Eristina, where you could catch a fish with every cast. As a youngster, I was in awe of these uncles as they were sport heroes to me. They would visit off and on over these years. When Uncle Dave moved to Cold Lake we spent many hours together playing cards, fishing, camping and visiting at Hrycauk family get togethers. We kept our boat at his Crane Lake dock for a number of years. Those were great years with many memories. Uncle Dave was a great host and really seemed to enjoy our family visits. He taught Natasha and Darcy how to ski behind his 15 foot aluminum fishing boat with a 15 hp outboard engine. That was hilarious. He would stop by our place at least once a week on his way to town to pick up his daily paper. Following his retirement he moved back to Winnipeg and our visits became less common. However, Uncle Dave always made an effort to travel back for Hrycauk family functions. His last trip to Cold Lake was to attend our fiftieth wedding anniversary and we really appreciated the effort at his age. That was just who he was. He was a great uncle and I will miss him dearly.

Uncle Dave and Auntie Ruth joined our family when they moved to Cold Lake in 1974 for his job with Esso. They were great additions to our family gatherings whether those were at our homes, enjoying water sports at their home on Crane Lake, or the 5 weeks they lived with us while their home was being completed there.
Uncle Dave, having worked at market gardens during his youth, helped me prune tomatoes to ensure bountiful crops. We often laughed when he planted 40feet of zucchinis in his first garden and had to stack them like cordwood in his garage in the fall.
Natasha and Darcy were involved in many sports and Uncle Dave was often there to cheer them on. Having spent hours training for the high calibre sports he played, he understood the commitment, dedication and sweat that created a top athlete. It was not uncommon to see tears roll down his cheeks when some young athlete made a spectacular play or scored an unbelievable goal as he rejoiced in their athletic prowess.
As I remember Uncle Dave the most vivid memory will be of his hearty laugh as he was quick to capture the humour in daily situations. We are all richer for having shared many of these special moments with him.

I am so sorry I am unable to make Uncle Dave’s celebration of life. So many memories from learning to water ski behind his fishing boat to his hearty laugh. He had a heart of gold and always wanted to make the kids laugh. He was an example of strength through Ruth’s battle with cancer. He was an amazing uncle and I am better for knowing him. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. Natasha Hrycauk
