My name is Eileen Walker. I have known Brooke since childhood in the 1940s. Her mother, Evelyn Baker, and my mother, Madeleine Ryan, were first cousins.They grew up in Ontario, more like sisters than cousins, both with an adventurous spirit. In 1925 they migrated west to teach school in the wilds of northern Alberta. In due time Evelyn married a cowboy cum entrepreneur named Bert Bowsfield and Madeleine married a gregarious Irishman, Robson Press. They settled in the same general area of northeastern Alberta, each family raising four children. This is where Brooke and I fit in. The Bowsfields were the only relatives that we knew, growing up in the St. Paul/Bonnyville area. The Press family (at Rife) and the Bowsfield family (at Fort Kent) visited back and forth on a regular basis through the years, establishing a special bond. Although Brooke was my junior by nine years, we became good friends in later life. We often discussed our parents and our common links to previous generations, filling in the blanks as best we could. During the past few years we've enjoyed reminiscing about our childhood and the special relationship our families shared.
My condolences to Brooke's family at this time of sadness.
