KIRBY, Garey
December 14, 1949 ~ March 3, 2025
Garey Lee Kirby was a man of great strength, deep loyalty, and an unwavering love for his family and community. Born on December 14, 1949, in El Centro, California, to Edward Lavern and Rosa Leigh Kirby, his journey took him many places, but his heart always remained in Peers, Alberta, where he and his family settled in 1961.
Garey passed away peacefully on March 3, 2025, with family by his side.
Peers became more than just a place to live—it was home. Garey was an active part of the community, always ready to lend a hand, volunteer, or be there for a neighbor. He had a passion for baseball, and being the catcher for his beloved Boss Truckers was one of his greatest joys. He was a force to be reckoned with, fiercely protective of his family and friends.
As life changed, so did his path. He moved to Grande Prairie to be closer to his son Keith and his grandchildren before eventually settling in the Bonnyville and Cold Lake area, where he cherished time with his daughters, Trish and Kristie, and their families. It was there, surrounded by loved ones, that he spent his final years. No matter where he lived, his love for family never wavered. Later in life, Garey was fortunate to connect with his children, Jason and Kerry, bringing another chapter to his journey.
To his grandchildren, he was Poppa—always happy to spend time with them, share stories, and be a steady presence in their lives. His love for motorcycles, camping, and animals—especially dogs—was a big part of who he was, and a rescue dog was almost always by his side. Some of his best memories were weekends at McLeod Valley, camping with his cousin and dear friend, JR.
He is survived by his children, Keith (Josée) Kirby, Tricia Kirby, Kristie (Kyle) Brown, Jason (Darlene) Kinsey, and Kerry (Joy) Gardner; as well as his grandchildren, Jake, Kayla, Sammie, Austin, and Kayd. He is also survived by Eileen Kirby, with whom he shared a family and a lasting friendship.
Garey was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Rosa Leigh Kirby, his brother John “Eddie” Kirby, and his young siblings Alan, Keith, and Rosa, who tragically passed in a fire.
Garey’s kindness, loyalty, and adventurous spirit will never be forgotten. His memory lives on in the laughter of his grandchildren, in the stories shared by those who knew him, and in the simple joys of the outdoors that he loved so much.
